Greater London Authority Social Integration Design Laboratory

We were commissioned by the consultancy of the New Economics Foundation, NEFC, to lead the policy work stream of a year-long Social Integration design laboratory, in partnership with the London Met and Snook, for the Greater London Authority. The lab aimed to support local authorities in London to embed Mayor’s Social Integration agenda into the work of urban regeneration teams in London’s boroughs.

We have worked with 17 London councils, accompanying each one’s work on a specific urban regeneration programme in order to understand the challenges and the opportunities faced by, and within, local government along each project’s journey. Our focus has been to identify, within these journeys, the key enablers for the creation of more socially cohesive places. Equally we identified specific project-level innovations and how they can be mainstreamed by higher-level policy change, changes in in-council working culture, and changes in the way regeneration work is procured, monitored, and evaluated. We have provided tailored expertise to project teams, facilitated peer-learning, and held a series of talks and workshops on urban regeneration approached through the lens of socially inclusive cities and places. We have edited the progress report on behalf of the project partnership, made available as guidance to local councils and presented to stakeholders and the public.
